How to nail your next job interview

A job interview is your chance to show an employer who you are, what you can do and why you’d be a good fit for their team. Whether you’re new to the industry or a seasoned tradesperson, the basics remain the same. With some focused preparation, you’ll walk in more confident and leave a stronger impression.

Preparation matters

Start with research. You don’t need to study every detail about the company but take time to learn the type of work they do, where they operate and what kind of projects they’re involved in. This helps you tailor your answers and shows that you’re genuinely interested. If you’re working with a recruiter, ask them for insight. They often know what the client is really looking for and can help you focus your message.

Get your documents ready the night before. Bring your CSCS or ECS card, any certifications, ID and a printed copy of your CV. If it’s a site-based interview, clean PPE and boots might be required. For office meetings, go for smart but comfortable clothing. First impressions go a long way, especially when punctuality and presentation are part of the job.

During the interview

The most effective way to describe your experience is with clear, practical examples. Rather than listing every task, explain the types of sites you’ve worked on, your role within the team and the outcome of the work. For example, you might mention your part in a commercial fit-out or a new-build project and how you worked alongside others. If there’s something you haven’t done before, be honest but show a willingness to learn.

Interviews are a two-way conversation. Ask questions that matter to you, like site hours, tools, locations or team size. It shows you’re thinking about the role seriously and want to make sure it’s the right fit. Employers tend to value candidates who show interest and initiative.

After the interview

Once it’s over, take a moment to reflect and follow up. If you’re still interested, send a message or call your recruiter to say so. This small gesture helps keep you top of mind as the hiring decision is being made.
