The top mistakes to avoid on your CV

A strong CV is one of the most important tools in your job search. It gives employers a first impression before they’ve even spoken to you. In the M&E contracting world, where speed matters and demand can shift quickly, having a well-prepared CV helps you get noticed and move faster.

Keep your details up to date

One of the most common mistakes is missing or incorrect contact information. Make sure your phone number and email address are clearly visible near the top. If you’ve changed numbers or aren’t checking an old email, update it before you send anything off. Add your home location too, along with how far you’re willing to travel. If you’re open to working away, say so. This can increase your chances of being shortlisted.

Highlight your trade and tickets

Be clear about your trade and skills from the start. Whether you’re an electrician, plumber, pipefitter or duct fitter, say it straight away. Include any relevant cards or certifications such as CSCS, ECS, IPAF or PASMA and their expiry dates. Clients sometimes require specific tickets for site access and this info helps recruiters match you faster.

Explain gaps and avoid overloading

If there are gaps in your work history, explain them briefly. Even something as simple as “March to May 2024 – between projects” shows transparency and builds trust. Avoid writing pages of detail for each role. Instead, summarise your experience in a few sentences. Include the type of project, your main tasks and the size of the team. Something like “Electrician, Leeds, Feb to Jun 2024 – 1st fix installation on a commercial development, worked alongside a team of six” works well.

Keep it current

Make sure your CV reflects your most recent role, ticket renewals or relevant changes. An outdated CV can hold you back, especially if you’ve worked on large or fast-paced sites recently. Take five minutes to refresh your CV before applying to any new role. It could make a big difference.
